Carnival Cruise Line's Mardi Gras

It’s the third name drop by Carnival following the reveal of welcome area Paradise Plaza and adult-friendly area Calypso Lagoon. The final two space names and details, which will be a family-friendly area and an adults-only private area, will be revealed later. Lokono Cove will have kiosks and stores alongside “an authentic Bahamian artisan market” showcasing local craftsmanship, according to Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy. Beyond the items for sale, the space will have music and murals to enhance the space, and local food. The 369-acre site less than 20 miles east of Freeport will be the first dedicated to Carnival Cruise Line, although Carnival ships have used sister line destinations Princess Cays and Half Moon Cay for years. Another major renovation now completed is an overhaul and upgrade to Camp Ocean, the dedicated youth space for cruisers ages 2-11.

I stayed in an Ocean Suite (a type of mini-suite), and I was thoroughly impressed by the amount of storage space, which would have been more than adequate for the four people my room could accommodate. I was also floored to discover ample electrical outlets, including at least one USB port near every bed in the room — including the bunk that pulled down from overhead. These are great examples of how Carnival has paid attention to passenger preferences.

I tried Carnival's older cruise ships and never want to go back

Even without any new contracts for ship construction, three new ships are slated to join the Carnival family in the upcoming months, in addition to the delivery of the gigantic new Sun Princess for Princess Cruises, which is just days away. A second Sphere-class ship will also be joining Princess Cruises as Star Princess in summer 2025. Similarly, the second ship in the Icon class, Star of the Seas, is expected to have a size comparable to Icon of the Seas. The 110,000-gross-ton Carnival Glory can welcome 2,980 guests aboard at double occupancy, or up to 3,806 travelers when fully booked. The Conquest-class ship is also home to 1,150 international team members. With more space for stretching out indoors, plus a large balcony for kicking back outdoors, try an Ocean Suite to experience private, luxurious relaxation.

Carnival Cruise Line’s Excel Class is home to the biggest ships in the cruise line’s fleet.

Then they sometimes leave the stage behind, like in The Most Magnificent Circus and We Are One where they soar above the audience. Or Color My World, a show where they break into actual live-graffiti painting, right on stage. Carnival Celebration plays host to a lineup of all-new shows, plus fan-favorites Celestial Strings, which reimagines rock and pop favorites as symphonic classical compositions, and Amor Cubano with the rhythmic sounds of today’s Latin hits. Since your huge Suite on Carnival Jubilee™ affords you VIP status, you're in the priority line when getting on and off the ship… plus Suites come with exclusive perks! They’re not concerts, they’re not exactly plays… these shows are something else entirely. Every performance is built on amazing songs you know and love, presented like you’ve never seen before.

Carnival's pizza is some of the best in the biz, and the customizable tacos and burritos at BlueIguana offer something for everyone. Aft of 820 Biscayne, Summer Landing makes a comeback on Carnival Celebration. Outside, a small pool, two hot tubs and the Watering Hole provide an inviting spot to hang out on a hot day.

Carnival Celebration

Carnival Fun Italian Style incorporates Carnival’s signature high-energy environment, friendly team members and many familiar venues, plus several new, creative concepts – from Italian-themed restaurants, bars and entertainment. The Carnival Jubilee also brings back the extensive dining options available on its sister ships. In addition to a self-service buffet and two main dining rooms, the cruise ship will offer a selection of included and extra-charge venues. “Our Excel-class ships have been a tremendous addition to the Carnival fleet and proven very popular with our guests,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

New colors, furnishings, and activity options are all part of the enhancements. A second former Costa ship, Carnival Firenze, will also begin sailing for the line in 2024. The ship originally debuted as part of Costa Cruises – also part of Carnival Corp. – in 2019 to serve China, but with the country’s international cruise market dormant in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the vessel was rehomed. TPG was on board Carnival Celebration's second sailing and the first from its Miami home port to the Caribbean. Here, I'll outline what's new, what we loved and what could use some tweaks. Gone is the line's iconic soaring atrium, replaced by the three-deck-high Celebration Central with panoramic windows looking out to sea.

Previously known as Costa Firenze, this is also a Vista-class ship, and a sister ship to Costa Venezia, which will have joined the Carnival fleet a year prior. Both of these ships are retaining their Costa funnels and a will have modified hull art as a nod to their Italian roots and unique style. Carnival Firenze will join the fleet in spring 2024 after being transferred from sister brand Costa Cruise Lines. The ship will offer a variety of cruises year-round, with sailings set for popular destinations in Baja, California and the Mexican Riviera. This ship sailed under the name Costa Firenze with Costa and is also a Vista Class ship and sister to the Costa Venezia which has already joined the Carnival fleet.

According to Shipping Italy, the reports indicate a size estimated at 208,000 gross tons – well above the 183,000 gross tons of Carnival Cruise Line’s Excel-class ships Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee. What's nice about Carnival's newer ships is that they offer a choice of more cabin categories than the line's older vessels. On Carnival Jubilee, options include inside cabins, outside rooms with windows, balcony accommodations and mini-suites, which are basically larger balcony cabins that have more closet space and can sleep up to four people. I knew there was a reason I was drawn to the Center Stage Bar on Carnival Jubilee, Carnival Cruise Line's newest ship and the third in the Excel Class. The bar — along with several other dining venues and the onboard shops — wasn't open during my two-night sailing prior to the ship's first voyage with paying passengers. But each time I passed by it in Grand Central, one of the ship's six zones, I couldn't help staring.

However, Some of the newer ships are also moved from a sister brands or could even be a refurbished older vessel like we’ve seen with the Sunshine Class ships. This vessel was first put into service in 1996 under the name Carnival Destiny, and was the inaugural ship of the Destiny Class. In 2013, the Carnival Destiny underwent a remarkable 49-day, $155-million dollar refurbishment and was renamed and reclassified as the first Sunshine Class ship. Mardi Gras is also the only ship name in the current Carnival Cruise Line fleet without including the word Carnival. This honors Carnival’s original Mardi Gras that first sailed for the brand on March 11, 1972.

They include drawings by children from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Dr. Seuss characters and wildlife scenes that will make you feel like you're sailing in different areas of the world. You can walk from the Golden Mermaid bar (which boasts a giant wall mural featuring mermaids and hidden references to SpongeBob SquarePants) through an archway designed to look like a whale skeleton. Since your huge Suite on Mardi Gras® affords you VIP status, you're in the priority line when getting on and off the ship… plus Suites come with exclusive perks! Since your huge Suite on Carnival Celebration® affords you VIP status, you're in the priority line when getting on and off the ship… plus Suites come with exclusive perks! Celebration Central incorporates the atrium/performance area of the same name, JavaBlue Cafe, Bonsai Sushi, Bonsai Teppanyaki, Piano Bar 88 and the Punchliner Comedy Club. The ship is also the second Carnival vessel to bear the Celebration name. The first, known simply as Celebration, set sail for the line in 1987. It left the fleet in 2008 before ending up with Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line as Grand Celebration, which was scrapped during the industry's pandemic pause in 2021. Now, Carnival Celebration resurrects the name to offer more fun to more people.

And while you sail along, the kids and the adults can make use of exclusive access to the nearby Family Harbor Lounge, plus other exclusive perks around the ship. In-room, there’s a full bathroom… plus the convenience of a separate washroom. A private yacht it’s not… but leave the sailing to us — you’d rather be relaxing anyway. When you’re cruising on Carnival Celebration there’s just so much destination to be found… even right on board.

Crew members were also invited to test the vessel's top-deck activities, including the ropes course and the Bolt roller coaster. "Dear Future Husband" isn't the only interactive entertainment you'll find on board. Another is the Lone Star Tailgate, a three-hour pool deck event in tribute to the ship's Texas home port. When you're finished on Deck 7, the upper level of Currents, make your way up one more deck to The Shores, a beach- and boardwalk-centric zone that celebrates life above the sea instead of under it. There, you'll find the nautically themed Marina Bar, and the ship's deli, Beach Buns. Whatever you do, don't miss Coastal Slice, which serves free and delicious pizza.
